At least 27 people died in a fire in a hospital for Corona patients in Baghdad

Medical sources in three hospitals said that at least 27 people were killed and 46 others injured when a fire broke out on Saturday in a hospital in southeast Baghdad equipped to receive Covid-19 patients.

The sources added that the fire in Ibn Al-Khatib Hospital in the Diyala Bridge region in the Iraqi capital broke out after an accident that led to an explosion of an oxygen tank.

A Reuters photographer said that several ambulances rushed to the hospital and took the injured.

The sources said that uninfected patients were also taken outside the hospital.

The Iraqi News Agency quoted the Director General of the Iraqi Civil Defense as saying that the fire broke out in the floor designated for the intensive care unit for respiratory patients, and that 90 out of a total of 120 people in the hospital were rescued.

Major General Kazem Bohan added that the Civil Defense managed to put out the fire.

The Corona epidemic crisis increased the suffering of the Iraqi health system, which was destroyed by decades of sanctions, war and neglect.

Today, Saturday, the Iraqi Ministry of Health said that the total number of people infected with the virus reached 1025288, including 15,217 deaths.
