Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Hessen has now modernized almost 100 of its buildings for more climate protection.

Around 160 million euros have been invested, said Finance Minister Michael Boddenberg (CDU) in a balance sheet of the CO2 reduction and energy efficiency program (COME program).

A corresponding program should start this year for universities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

According to the minister, around 40 construction projects are to be implemented by 2025 with the participation of 11 universities and colleges.

A total of 200 million euros are available for this.

Boddenberg emphasized that the extensive renovations that have taken place in state buildings since 2012 could save up to 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide within the next 30 years.

That corresponds to the CO2 emissions of around 1,800 single-family homes in the same period.

"In this way, we are getting a little closer to our major goal of a CO2-neutral state administration from 2030," explained the finance minister.

The COME program has mostly financed extensive basic energy renovations.

"They particularly concerned the insulation of facades and roofs and the renewal of windows," said the minister.

For example, outdated fossil fuel-fired boilers have also been replaced.
