Invited Sunday from Europe 1, Françis Kalifat, president of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions, once again castigated the decision of the Court of Cassation, which found the murderer of Sarah Halimi criminally irresponsible.

Calling for a new law on criminal irresponsibility, he believes that the latter should bear the name of the sixty-year-old.

INTERVIEW

He once described "important for France".

While several "angry rallies" are scheduled for Sunday in Paris and other cities in France to challenge the lack of trial after the murder of Sarah Halimi, Francis Kalifat, president of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF ), was the guest of the morning of Europe 1. The opportunity for him to again castigate the decision of the Court of Cassation, which concluded that the murderer of the Jewish sexagenarian was not responsible.

Halimi case: after the emotion, should we change the law on criminal irresponsibility?

"The problem is that the Court of Cassation only said the part of the law that it wanted to see in this article because another interpretation was possible. It could have read it differently", regrets Francis Kalifat.

"She could have made a courageous decision, that of contributing to the development of the law."

The magistrates "did not speak justice"

"Unfortunately," he continues, "this reading and this mechanical application of the law leads to consequences which are shocking, revolting even from the point of view of equity."

And Françis Kalifat to point out magistrates who "once again lacked courage", and "return the ball to the legislator".

"They surely said the right, but they did not say justice. I see in this decision a denial of justice", insists the guest of Europe 1.

A change in the law?

"It's urgent"

Faced with the emotion aroused by the decision, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron called for "a change in the law" on criminal liability.

A speech greeted by the boss of CRIF, seeing "a strong decision".

"He reacted immediately by asking the Keeper of the Seals to work on a new law. And the fact that it comes from the Keeper of the Seals reassures us because I have high hopes that we will have this new law before the summer," said Francis Kalifat, for whom "there is urgency".

The fact remains that even if the law were to change, Sarah Halimi's family will not be "fulfilled in its right of litigation", estimates Francis Kalifat. Also, "if we want to pay tribute to Sarah Halimi, failing to have done her justice, this new law would have to bear her name", claims Francis Kalifat. And to call again for mobilization on this Sunday. "It is an important day for France because faced with such a legal disaster, faced with a decision which says the law without saying justice, we must mobilize. The future of our society is at stake."
