Rostock (dpa / mv) - June 19 marks the latest possible start date for the holiday season 2021 for the managing director of the regional tourism association, Tobias Woitendorf. This weekend the summer holidays begin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein, followed a few days later in Berlin, Brandenburg and Hamburg.

In view of the high seven-day incidences of around 140 in the state and 160 nationwide, the hopes for a season start at Pentecost should not be too high, Woitendorf told the dpa.

The Corona state ordinance is valid until May 22nd.

As government spokesman Andreas Timm said, the MV summit will look at the number of infections in early / mid-May and assess the situation.

According to Woitendorf, there are calculations according to which the incidences can be reduced nationwide to around 50 as early as Pentecost, which would make a solution like 2020 possible.

"At that time there was the opening for locals on Ascension Day and a good week later at Whitsun for guests from other federal states," he said.

However, the industry should not rely on this timeline.

«In no case should we risk the summer season.

That is the more important maxim », said Woitendorf.

The attitude of the tourism association is essentially supported by the Dehoga association in MV.

Dehoga country president Lars Schwarz may already have the opportunity to open at Whitsun.

For the hotel industry, he also considers a start in June to be realistic.

According to the ordinance, outdoor restaurants can be opened subject to conditions such as corona tests if a district or an independent city has a seven-day incidence of less than 50 new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants for at least 14 days in a row.

Woitendorf did not want to endorse an assessment like that of the head of the Chancellery, Helge Braun.

He had recently assumed that the infection situation would ease in May and travel would be possible again from August.

Braun expected that the relieving effect of the vaccination and the start of the warm season in May will be noticeable.

A threat to the summer season would have catastrophic consequences for the entire industry.

Woitendorf assumes, however, that the vaccination campaign will be clearly successful by June at the latest and that the number of patients in hospitals and intensive care units will decrease.

The efforts of the holiday resorts to set up test stations would also contribute to relaxation.

In the past few days, a drive-in station was opened in Kühlungsborn, where up to 5000 tests per day are possible.

According to Mayor Rüdiger Kozian (independent), this large capacity is the prerequisite for a gentle opening of tourism.
