Steinmeier celebrates the 76th anniversary of Buchenwald's liberation

April 24, 2021 "Rebirth, unity, cohesion, reconciliation in the new Republican Constitution, were the sentiments that guided the reconstruction after the war and that guide us today towards overcoming the crisis caused by the pandemic which, in addition to affecting us with the loss of many affections, puts a strain on the economic and social life of the country. Now more than ever it is necessary to remain united in a joint effort that allows us to make ever stronger and reaffirm the values and ideals that are the basis of our civil life, that thread conductor who, from the Risorgimento to the Resistance, led to the rebirth of Italy ".
This was stated by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent, on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the Liberation, to the Combat and Weapon Associations. "The difficult moment we are experiencing - underlines the head of state - limits the methods of celebration but I wish with equal intensity, on this April 25, the Day of Freedom for all Italians, to remember the sacrifice of thousands of compatriots who fought in the ranks of the Resistance and fought in the troops of the Italian Liberation Corps, of those who were deported, interned, exterminated in concentration camps and of the women and men of all classes and backgrounds who did not lack their support, often paying hard for their choice ".
"In honoring the memory of all those who were protagonists in the conquest of freedom and democracy - he concludes - I address the representatives of the Armed Forces, Combat Associations, Weapons and Partisans, the greetings of all Italians, grateful for their tireless work aimed at keeping alive the ideals of self-denial, spirit of sacrifice and democracy symbolized by the Tricolor. Long live the Liberation, long live the Republic ".
