Tübingen (dpa) - The Tübingen Corona model project finally expires on Sunday night - even a letter from Mayor Boris Palmer (Greens) to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) could not change anything.

Since the incidence of the district alone will be used when the federal emergency brake comes into force, the model project must end, the city announced on Friday.

The state of Baden-Württemberg informed the city of this.

"Unfortunately, my letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel (...) couldn't change this decision either," said Palmer.

The Green politician wrote a letter to Merkel on Thursday asking for an extension of the model test. The incidence in Tübingen is still stable below 100, while it is more than twice as high in the district, Palmer said in the letter. The authors of the accompanying scientific research have also spoken out in favor of a continuation, according to Palmer.

Even after the model test has ended, the city of Tübingen would like to continue the rapid tests offered during the project.

However, not all test stations will remain in the city center.

Some of the stations will be relocated to other parts of the city in the coming days so that as many people as possible can be tested close to home at any time, said Palmer.

The rapid tests are now taking place as part of the federal citizen test and are still free.

The "Tübingen day ticket" as confirmation of a negative rapid test should also be passed on - for example for a visit to the hairdresser.

Due to the new corona rules, a negative rapid test must be submitted there in the future.
