Erfurt (dpa / th) - In order to support the repair work on the forests in Thuringia, the state has promised an additional premium for reforestation work.

The funding totaling 15 million euros is intended to grant private and municipal forest companies a one-time grant because the forest stands bind climate-damaging CO2, as the Ministry of Agriculture announced in Erfurt on Friday.

"Thuringia is the first and so far only federal state to take the path of monetary compensation for ecosystem services from forests," emphasized Minister Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff (left).

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the state of the Thuringian forests is "worrying".

Drought and bark beetle infestation would have affected the forests.

In the long term, the top priority remains to promote forest conversion and to develop species-rich forest stands of different ages.

Due to the CO2 storage effect of living trees and long-term processed wood, forests acted against further global warming.

The funding guidelines are scheduled to come into force at the end of May.

All active private and communal forest companies whose forest areas in Thuringia are registered with the social insurance for agriculture, forestry and horticulture can submit an application.
