With 26,240 new asylum applications in the first three months (January 1 to April 3, 2021) of this year, Germany is the front runner in the EU, followed by France (20,477) and Spain (13,034).

At the bottom of the list are Estonia with eleven and Hungary with only eight asylum applications.

The figures come from a confidential situation report by the EU Commission on the current migration situation, which WELT AM SONNTAG has received.

The report refers to previously unpublished figures from the EU asylum authority EASO (European Asylum Support Office).

According to the document, 41 percent of applicants in Germany are Syrians, followed by Afghans (14 percent) and Iraqis (seven percent).

A total of 102,674 asylum applications were submitted in the EU plus Switzerland and Norway in the first quarter.

This is a decrease of significantly more than a third compared to the same period of the previous year, which is mainly due to the corona pandemic.

As the situation report also shows, the number of illegal migrants from Turkey to the EU fell to 2368 by mid-April - according to the EU report, this is a decrease of 74 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The reason for the sharp decline is the corona pandemic. The main country of arrival was Greece (1,822 migrants), followed by Italy (477) and Bulgaria (99).
