Erfurt (dpa / th) - Because of the corona pandemic, Thuringia is currently suspending so-called substitute custodial sentences.

These are usually due when convicts are unable to pay fines.

Often it is about petty crime.

"Replacement custodial sentences of up to 90 daily rates are currently not enforced," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice.

The background is not to worsen the situation in prisons during the pandemic.

The length of the imprisonment depends on the number of daily rates that someone has been sentenced to.

Newcomers to the prisons would initially be brought to separate reception wards because of the Corona crisis.

This is to prevent possible infections from spreading throughout the facilities.

There are currently around 1,500 prisoners distributed across the five Thuringian penal institution, the spokesman said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the virus has been found in a low double-digit number of prisoners.

A middle double-digit number was affected among the approximately 930 employees.

So far, there have been no deaths in connection with Corona in the facilities.
