Erfurt (dpa / th) - With the arrival of spring, the risk of ticks increases in Thuringia.

"The ticks are only really active now because the temperatures are rising," said the head of the Barmer health insurance country, Birgit Dziuk, on Friday.

In Thuringia, 28 borreliosis infections have already been registered this year, reported the Barmer and referred to current data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

The small bloodsuckers transmit infectious diseases such as Lyme disease or meningitis in early summer meningoencephalitis (TBE).

According to the RKI, there is a risk of TBE infection in Germany, especially in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, in southern Hesse, in south-eastern Thuringia and in Saxony. In Thuringia, twelve districts or urban districts are currently TBE risk areas. The districts of Weimarer Land, Greiz, Hildburghausen, Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, Schmalkalden-Meiningen, Sonneberg, Ilm-Kreis, Saale-Holzland-Kreis, Saale-Orla-Kreis and the Weimarer Land are affected. Also the independent cities of Gera, Jena and Suhl.

"Anyone who uses the beginning of spring outside for gardening, walks in the woods or picnics in the park should then search themselves and, if necessary, the children for ticks," said Dziuk.

Ticks prefer to stay in tall grass and bushes.

However, the right clothing also protects you when you go for a walk.

The expert advice: long trousers, socks, sturdy shoes.

After an excursion or after working in the garden, the body should be checked for ticks.
