Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - With a joint online campaign, the brewing association and tourism advertisers in Baden-Württemberg want to market the brewing trade more strongly and attract visitors and tourists - as soon as that is possible again, mind you.

The campaign under the catchphrase «#bierbrauenbw» was actually planned last year on the occasion of the inclusion of the brewing trade in the intangible cultural heritage of Unesco.

However, Corona then thwarted the initiators' bill, as a spokesman said.

In the hope that the vaccinations will gradually have an effect and that something like brewery tours will become possible again in the medium term, the campaign is now being carried out.

The official start is on the day of German beer this Friday.

According to the Brauerbund, there are 208 breweries and more than 1500 different beers in Baden-Württemberg, only in Bavaria there are more.

A good 25 breweries and other destinations take part in the campaign.

The consequences of the corona pandemic - closed restaurants, pubs and bars, no events and no sport - are causing beer consumption to drop significantly and are making breweries difficult to cope with.

According to statistics, around 450,000 hectoliters of beer were sold in Baden-Württemberg in the first two months of the current year.

That is a third less than in the same period last year.

The figures relate to taxable sales, so it does not include alcohol-free beer, for example.

Last year, according to the Brewers' Association, there was an average of 331,000 hectoliters every month, a good 30,000 less than the year before.

The last number was similarly low, if not quite as low, in 2017. At that time, according to the information, a summer that was poor in weather and also free of football had depressed sales.
