Rommersheim (dpa / lrs) - The skeleton of a missing senior has been discovered in a concrete shaft in the Bitburg-Prüm district.

As the police announced on Friday, the man was reported missing by his wife in 2009.

The woman herself has now also died, said a police spokesman.

With the help of an autopsy, the identity of the senior was determined.

At the time of his disappearance, the man was 72 years old.

After witnesses alerted the police, officers took the clothed human skeleton from the approximately 1.50 meter deep shaft in the Eifel.

In addition, allegedly personal belongings of the missing senior were recovered.

Despite an intensive search and public manhunt, he was not found at the time.

According to previous studies, there have been no indications of a criminal offense, as it was said.

The forensic investigation continued.

The investigators believe it is possible that the body has been in the shaft near the village of Rommersheim since 2009, as a police spokesman said.

The fact that the location of the corpse is somewhat remote could also explain why the dead person was not discovered earlier.
