Hanover (dpa / lni) - Shortly before the withdrawal from Afghanistan, Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Boris Pistorius thanked German police officers for their commitment.

The SPD politician said on Friday that they had often worked at great risk in the almost 20-year mission.

Now it is especially important to support the Afghan local staff.

Germany will withdraw its police force deployed in Afghanistan by the end of April.

These were sent to train local security forces.

With the end of the NATO mission, three police officers from Lower Saxony who were deployed in Kabul will also return.

After almost 20 years of service in Afghanistan, "everything is certainly not good today," said Pistorius, "but a lot has gotten better."

After the withdrawal of NATO troops, people are now looking "with concern at the future of the country and the situation of the Afghans."

Pistorius called for support for Afghans who had worked for the German military and police for years.

"These people literally turned their heads for us," said the minister.

«You supported our work on site, in some cases made it possible in the first place.

Some will be in the focus of radical forces, especially the Taliban, and will have to fear for their lives. "

Offers of help should be easily accessible.
