Hanover (dpa / lni) - In Lower Saxony last year, the first year of the nursing training reform, 5775 young people decided to become a nurse.

The number is slightly down compared to 2019 (6075), but higher than in the years 2016 to 2018, as the Lower Saxony Hospital Society (NKG) announced on Friday.

"The fact that the number of trainees is so high despite the difficult framework conditions is a great success and a positive signal for the nursing profession - especially at the moment," said NKG chairman Hans-Heinrich Aldag.

Health Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) emphasized the importance of appreciation for the nursing profession, which is expressed above all in appropriate remuneration.

The training reform was implemented well and smoothly.

However, the goal must be to attract significantly more than 6,000 trainees annually for the profession.

By switching to a generalist approach to training, the separate areas of health and nursing, health and children's nursing and care for the elderly were merged in 2020.
