Munich (dpa) - Despite the UEFA confirmation for Munich as co-host of the European Championship, the DFB top has still left open the admission of spectators to the four games of the European Football Championship.

Association boss Fritz Keller welcomed the decision of the European Football Union on Friday as an important signal and said in a message that the games could “maybe even take place in front of an audience”, “if the pandemic development allows”.

UEFA said it had made its decision after local authorities confirmed that at least 14,500 spectators were possible in the Allianz Arena for all games.

According to the German Football Association, the state government of Bavaria had previously agreed to the lead scenario, in which a minimum capacity of 14,500 spectators in Munich was considered "realistic".

The German home games against France (June 15), Portugal (June 19) and Hungary (June 23) as well as a quarter-finals are planned for the Allianz Arena.

The European Championship games in Munich “will continue to be carefully and responsibly prepared and organized,” said Philipp Lahm, who is also the chief organizer of the European Championship 2024 in Germany.

«Corona determines our entire life.

The health and protection of people are our top priority, ”Lahm emphasized.

But the EM should "make anticipation for the time after the pandemic".

DFB director Oliver Bierhoff welcomed the UEFA decision as a good signal for the national team.

Joachim Löw's selection will play in the preliminary round "to a certain extent on the doorstep" of the team quarters in Herzogenaurach.

"When it comes to admitting viewers, we continue to rely on the decisions of the competent authorities," added Bierhoff.
