Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Despite the corona pandemic, the number of deaths in North Rhine-Westphalia fell to the lowest level since 2014 in March.

In March 2021, around 17,200 people died in North Rhine-Westphalia, as the State Statistical Office (IT.NRW) announced on Friday.

That was around eleven percent less than in March of the previous year (2020: 19,400).

In March 2014, a good 17,000 deaths were recorded.

In January of this year, the number of deaths, at almost 21,340, was almost 3,000 higher than in January 2020 (18,368).

Overall, the number of deaths in the first quarter of 2021 was slightly higher than in the same period last year.

In the first three months, around 55,800 deaths were registered nationwide.

In 2020 it was 55,300.

Some of the data have not yet been finally checked.

The number of deaths for 2020 and 2021 could change due to corrections and late registrations from the registry offices, it said.
