Cairo (dpa) - In the dispute over compensation for the blockade in the Suez Canal, the owner of the wrecked container ship "Ever Given" wants to go to court.

The owners have appealed against the confiscation of their ship and its cargo by the Egyptian authorities, the insurance company UK P&I announced today.

The case should therefore be heard on May 4th.

The background to this is that the parties could not agree on a settlement amount without going to court.

Egypt does not want to allow the ship to continue its journey until an agreement has been reached.

Around two weeks ago, the Suez Canal Authority

demanded $ 916 million (around 760 million euros) in compensation

from the owner of the freighter, the Japanese company Shoei Kisen Kaisha

.

The owner and the British insurer found the amount too high and the claim was insufficiently justified.

UK P&I argued, for example, that nobody was injured in the accident in the Suez Canal and that the surroundings were not polluted.

The group made its own offer to Egypt.

Those responsible had initially tried to reach an agreement without a long and complicated legal process.

According to the insurer, a total of 25 crew members are still on board, waiting for the journey to continue.

The 400-meter-long container ship ran aground on March 23, turned itself across and blocked the important shipping route between Asia and Europe for six days.

Hundreds of ships had to wait for passage because of the blockade.
