Alt Tellin (dpa) - After the major fire in the piglet rearing facility Alt Tellin (Western Pomerania-Greifswald), the municipality invited State Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) to a conversation.

Alt Telliner hope this will provide clarity on how things can continue at the plant site, as Mayor Frank Karstädt (CDU) said on Friday.

A representative of the operator should also come to the meeting.

Nobody in the village wants such a large facility to be built again.

Depending on the arrangement, residents of the neighboring towns could also be invited, it said.

The large facility, which has been criticized for years and which, according to the operator, had 7,000 sows and 50,000 piglets, had largely burned down on March 30th.

More than 55,000 animals perished in flames and smoke.

The disposal of the carcasses from the total of 18 burned-down stables has still not been completed.

The community representatives also asked the Greifswald Administrative Court to complete the procedure to obtain the operating license for the plant, said Karstädt.

The environmental association BUND had sued the administrative court years ago because of the fire protection, but the proceedings were never ended.

After the fire, the public prosecutor's office has started an investigation into the suspicion of negligent arson.

A technical defect is also possible.

A result of the investigations by the fire expert should be available at the beginning of May.

The public prosecutor's office estimates the damage at around 40 million euros.
