Berlin (dpa / bb) - Despite protests, the Kreuzberg bookstore Kisch & Co is to be evacuated according to a court ruling.

The landlord's lawsuit was successful in the first instance, the district court for civil matters announced on Thursday.

The reason given was that the commercial lease agreement with the bookstore operators was limited to May 31, 2020 and thus expired.

Housing protection regulations could not be applied to commercial leases, the court ruled.

There is also no lease for an apartment.

Supporters of the bookstore protested peacefully in front of the court in Moabit.

According to the court, the civil trial had been moved to a room in the criminal court for security reasons.

In a petition for the preservation of the neighborhood bookstore, almost 21,000 votes have been collected online so far.

Supporters wrote that the store had been established in Oranienstrasse for more than 20 years and that it attracted neighbors and tourists with numerous cultural events.

It should not be allowed that the typical Kreuzberg mixture is further destroyed.

The judgment is not yet final, an appeal can be lodged with the Supreme Court.
