Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The occupancy of the intensive care units in North Rhine-Westphalia with corona patients continues to approach the previous high in the pandemic.

According to the state government's overview, as of Thursday, 1067 Covid 19 sufferers nationwide are being treated intensively.

That is 24 more patients than on Wednesday.

The highest level in the pandemic to date was 1165 intensive care patients nationwide at the end of December.

As of Thursday, 798 of the 1067 intensive care patients would have to be ventilated.

That's 35 more than on Wednesday.

The total number of corona patients in the NRW clinics fell by 50 to 3792 people.

According to a current assessment by the Ministry of Health, the hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia are still a long way from a catastrophic "triage" situation, as State Secretary Edmund Heller said on Wednesday evening in the state parliament's health committee. He emphasized that no Covid patient should be afraid of not being able to be treated. In disaster medicine, “triage” means that medical professionals have to decide who to help first due to scarce resources based on certain criteria.

The total number of free intensive care beds with ventilation technology fell again in NRW to 457 nationwide as of Thursday.

That's nine fewer than on Wednesday and 68 fewer than on Tuesday.

In the past week, this number was at times below the 500 mark.

Hospitals repeatedly point out that they must also have sufficient staff available to treat seriously ill patients.

That is why clinics have reduced operations that can be planned, for example.

New beds were also created.
