Straubing (dpa) - For the EHC Red Bull Munich, the title hunt in the German ice hockey league has come to an abrupt end.

Coach Don Jackson's team also lost the second playoff game at ERC Ingolstadt 4: 5 (1: 1, 3: 1, 0: 2) and failed for the first time in six years in the quarter-finals.

On Tuesday, the three-time German champions surprisingly lost 4-1 to the Schanzer.

"Neither of us had planned that," Jackson said after the game at MagentaSport.

"A very unfortunate defeat, no question about it."

The second in the preliminary round of the southern group had gone into the playoffs as the best-form team in the league and was next to Adler Mannheim as the top favorite for the title.

Of the last twelve preliminary round games, the EHC had won eleven games.

On Thursday everything looked like a successful revenge for the guests, but Ingolstadt got going again in the final third and shot the EHC through Brandon Defazio in overtime from the playoffs.

"That was of course very emotional and feels really good," said Defazio.

The ERC is surprisingly the first team in the semi-finals to start on Monday.

The other three quarter-finals will be decided on Saturday.

The Adler Mannheim as the best DEL preliminary round team prevented an early playoff-off without their injured striker David Wolf with a 3-1 (3-0, 0-0, 0-1) at the Straubing Tigers.

After the surprising 2: 3 after extra time in the first game on Tuesday, coach Pavel Gross swapped the ranks of his team.

«Today we had a completely different intensity.

These are playoffs, and that's exactly what we need, ”said Gross, who is expecting another close game on Saturday.

Even for the secret favorite Eisbären Berlin, the season is not over yet.

The first round of the northern group struck back on Thursday with an impressive 6: 0 (2: 0, 1: 0, 2: 0) at the Iserlohn Roosters in Sauerland.

Iserlohn had won the first match 4-3.

The Grizzlys Wolfsburg forced a decisive duel with a 3: 2 (1: 0, 2: 2, 0: 0) against the Fischtown Pinguins, which takes place again in Bremerhaven.

There the penguins won 4-2 on Tuesday.

The semi-finals will begin next Monday and will also only be played in "best-of-three" mode.

This means that, unlike in normal seasons, only two wins instead of four are necessary to advance.

The season, which is heavily influenced by the coronavirus pandemic, will take place this time much shorter and in a different mode.
