Bornheim (dpa / lrs) - Offspring in the Storch family: The first little adebars of the year in the Palatinate have hatched.

In Knittelsheim (district of Germersheim), seven boys have been counted so far, said Jessica Lehmann, head of the Rhineland-Palatinate Stork Center, on Thursday.

The first offspring had also been spotted in Bornheim (Südliche Weinstrasse district).

"In a nest opposite the stork center, the heads of young storks are shaking."

Offspring are also reported from other places - for example from Jockgrim and Kandel.

Unfortunately, Lehmann told the German Press Agency whether it would be a good stork year until after the breeding season.

“Last year, cold and wet weather in May cost the lives of many chicks.

Nevertheless, there were areas in the Palatinate and Rheinhessen that were not affected at all. "

It remains to be seen how the weather conditions develop.

"A lot depends on that when the young are rearing."

In 2020 there were 27 occupied stork nests in Bornheim, as Lehmann said.

"This year we have 30 occupied stork nests in the Bornheim district."

There is still no complete overview of the Palatinate.

"Some storks are in the process of building their nests."

The sexually mature animals are now back from their winter quarters.

“Occasionally, even younger storks arrive, but they do not breed.

Not every stork spotted on a roof needs a nest, ”said Lehmann.

Only storks that approach their offspring are dependent on nests.

"They go back to their old nest or switch to existing nests."

If both options were unsuccessful, storks would build their own nests.
