Düsseldorf / Cologne (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's FDP boss Joachim Stamp (50) is applying for re-election at a digital state party on Saturday.

So far, nobody has registered a candidate for opposition, reported the Secretary General of the NRW-FDP, Johannes Vogel, on Thursday.

With Stamp, who is also deputy prime minister and family minister in North Rhine-Westphalia, the entire state executive board is running for re-election.

In November 2017, Stamp was elected as the successor to Christian Lindner as chairman of the strongest German FDP state association with almost 18,000 members with 93 percent approval and was confirmed in office with around 95 percent in 2018.

Due to the corona pandemic, planned state party conferences and the scheduled board elections had to be postponed.

Now the party congress is being rescheduled in digital form.

Federal party leader Christian Lindner is also to be connected digitally for a greeting.

Only the executive state board and the party congress presidium will be on site in a Cologne event hall.

The 400 delegates entitled to vote cast their votes in digital form.

The result is then confirmed by letter.

In terms of content, the main focus of the party congress is a key proposal by the board of directors on equal opportunities for society. Among other things, it calls for the “talent schools” pilot project to be rolled out nationwide. So far, there are 60 talent schools in North Rhine-Westphalia with above-average well-equipped facilities in districts with special social problems. They should create more educational equality for disadvantaged children.

The state board also proposes various projects to promote equity culture and home ownership.

The state could help "lower the ticket to get a loan at all," explained Vogel.

The FDP politician argued that such “social housing purchases” - already successfully practiced in Singapore - could turn more tenants into owners and narrow the wealth gap between rich and poor.
