Grömitz (dpa / lno) - Sea rescuers fetched a severely hypothermic kayaker from the Baltic Sea, which was about eight degrees cold, on Wednesday in front of Grömitz (Ostholstein district).

The 47-year-old from the Hamburg area capsized his sea kayak and drifted about 250 meters off the coast in the water, as announced by the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People.

According to the assessment of the sea rescuers, the 47-year-old would only have made it ashore with great effort on his own because of the offshore wind of force 5 from the northwest.

A resident noticed the 47-year-old from his house near Bliesdorf in the early afternoon and alerted the rescue workers.

The rescue boat "Hans Ingwersen" had arrived at the scene of the accident about 15 minutes later, the rescue team announced.

The man was severely hypothermic when he was rescued.

"His core body temperature was just over 30 degrees," said foreman Nils Reher.

He was taken to a hospital.
