Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The universities in Baden-Württemberg have warned of the serious consequences of the federal government's corona emergency brake for students in the state.

"The emergency brake law means a" non-semester "for many students in the natural sciences and technical courses as well as medicine, and will lead to delays in graduation," said Stephan Dabbert, chairman of the state rectors' conference of the south-west universities on Wednesday in Stuttgart.

He hopes that the state will interpret the law in such a way that “these courses can continue to operate”.

After all, there have been no major corona outbreaks at universities so far.

Since the first Corona wave in March 2020, the courses at universities have generally been digital. According to state law, there are only exceptions in individual cases when presence is absolutely necessary - for example, if the students have contact with patients or need special laboratory or work rooms. This applies above all to teaching in the clinical part of medical studies as well as in natural science and technical subjects.

With the federal emergency brake, the same rules now apply to schools and universities.

If the seven-day incidence exceeds the threshold value of 165 on three consecutive days, face-to-face teaching is prohibited.

Dabbert explained: "If you apply the rules for schools one-to-one to universities and colleges, we have to stop practical teaching immediately from an incidence of 165."
