Gießen (dpa / lhe) - The Hessian police caught numerous speeders at the Europe-wide traffic action day “Speedmarathon”.

From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, more than 500 police officers and municipal employees were present at more than 200 measuring points across the country.

Most of the speed limits were observed, the police said on Thursday in their balance sheet.

However, 93 drivers were so fast that they had to do without their driver's license for at least four weeks.

In Wiesbaden, a driver accelerated at the permitted 50 to 129 kilometers per hour, at another point a driver reached 126 kilometers per hour, as the police reported. According to the officials, a driver in a 30 zone in Hanau had a 64 on the speedometer. A courier driver with corona samples on board was traveling in the Lahn-Dill district at 137 kilometers per hour instead of 100.

In Frankfurt, a civil patrol of the Autoposer, Raser, Tuner (KART) unit noticed a driver who was accelerating to over 200 kilometers per hour instead of the permitted 80.

At the end of the supposed inner-city race, the co-driver stretched an outstretched middle finger in the direction of the officers.

"The mood suddenly changed when the police officers seized the car, the driver's license and the passenger's mobile phone," the police report said.

Nationwide, around 210,000 vehicles had passed the previously announced measuring points, more than 7,000 too quickly;

5806 up to 20 kilometers per hour, you have to pay a fine of up to 35 euros.

A fine of between 70 and 120 euros and one point awaits 917 drivers.

There were several violations of the ban on cell phones at the wheel.

In the district of Giessen, a car with 70 defects, including a defective brake line, was shut down.

The annual day of action aims to highlight driving too fast as the main cause of serious accidents.
