Cuxhaven (dpa / lni) - Now it's official: The Cuxhaven couple Birgit Berends and Stefan Kirchhoff own the largest penguin collection in the world.

This was confirmed by the record institute for Germany on Thursday after an on-site check with a certificate.

Berends and Kirchhoff therefore own more than 26,000 copies of the tailcoats.

"Puzzles, books, stamps, postcards, figures made of different materials, thimbles, ties, T-shirts or curiosities such as pacifiers and cigar belly ties: I have never seen all of that at once," said record judge Laura Kuchenbecker.

Berends and Kirchhoff already have four entries in the Guinness Book of Records - the first is from 2006 with 2520 animals, the last from 2011 with more than 11,000 animals.

Part of their collection is exhibited in their own penguin museum in Cuxhaven.

The largest figure measures 1.90 meters, the smallest half a centimeter.

The remaining copies are housed in the house of the two, in the end they also had to rent a warehouse.

The current record should be the last after 30 years of collecting passion: the collection should be reduced "to a manageable level" through sales.

"There are already people on the waiting list who want certain penguins," said Behrens.

The rest is sold over the Internet or in the museum shop.
