Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - A million dollar project at the Chemnitz Clinic is taking shape: The topping-out ceremony on the new building of House 9 was celebrated on Thursday with symbolic blows of the hammer.

The shell work is now complete.

In the four-storey new building, several nursing wards with a total of 160 beds as well as an operating theater center are being built.

The clinic announced that the project was the largest single building project in decades.

The costs amount to around 87.8 million euros, and completion is planned for the second half of next year.

In addition, several clinics such as neurology, orthopedics and ophthalmology are to be housed centrally in one location with the new building, including modifications to existing buildings.

“The distances are shortened for patients and employees,” emphasized Managing Director Thomas Jendges.

The Chemnitz Clinic is 100 percent owned by the city and one of the three maximum care providers in Saxony.

According to its own information, it has almost 1,800 beds.

More than 73,000 inpatients and around 100,000 outpatients were treated annually.
