Bremen (AP) - After the sixth defeat in a row, it will be really tight again for Werder Bremen in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga.

The green-whites lost the basement duel against FSV Mainz 05 with 0: 1 (0: 1) on Wednesday evening and thus set a negative record in their club history.

Mainz, on the other hand, remained unbeaten for the sixth time in a row and overtook Bremen in the table.

Werder now only has four points ahead of Hertha BSC on the relegation place, but the Berliners also have two catch-up games to contest.

After the North Germans were only able to save themselves in the relegation last season, they are now threatened with trembling again until the end of the season.

Thanks to Adam Szalai's winning goal (16th minute), Mainz are well on their way to staying up.

An impressive performance by the new coach Bo Svensson.

Bremen started extremely aggressively and tried to put the Mainz under pressure early on. Werder coach Florian Kohfeldt had promised his team an active appearance before the game and they kept their word. However, despite all the vigor, the great play deficits of the green-whites became clear. For years, the North Germans have lacked a game designer with high quality. The line-up with Josh Sargent behind the two leaders Milot Rashica and Niclas Füllkrug looked offensive - but the home side were hardly dangerous in the first round.

Instead, the Mainz team did not go into the locker room with a tour that was not undeserved.

After Bremen's defender Milos Veljkovic slipped on a Mainz counterattack, Karim Onisiwo initially failed to Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka, but Szalai took the lead.

The Bremen momentum was there for now.

Although Füllkrug failed again at FSV goalkeeper Robin Zentner (31st), the Mainz team now had the game largely under control and could even have heard through Leandro Barreiro.

Pavlenka parried strongly (38th).

Shortly before the break, Werder apparently managed to equalize.

After a corner, Zentner parried a filling pitcher header, but then did not have the ball completely under control.

While trying to clear the ball, Barreiro shot the Bremer Sargent, from where the game device bounced into the goal.

But after referee Marco Fritz had looked at the scene again on the screen, he decided to foul against Zentner.

A highly controversial decision that made Kohfeldt freak out on the sidelines.

After the change of sides, a gripping exchange of blows developed.

Szalai pounded the ball on the crossbar shortly after the break, Onisiwo failed to Pavlenka.

Rashica, who was unhappy overall, forgave Werder.

Bremen pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Mainu took the lead over time.
