Bonn (dpa) - The price jumps at the petrol pumps have become even greater.

The Federal Cartel Office reported on Thursday at one and the same gas station that there were price differences of around 12 cents per liter a day on average.

If you compare the gas stations in a city, you can even find differences averaging up to 22 cents per liter.

The fluctuations were thus around two cents each larger than in the previous year.

The fuel prices are usually highest in the morning (5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.) and lowest in the evening (6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.).

And the competition watchdogs noticed something else: "You can assume that the right petrol station at the right time will remain a good choice in the future," said the President of the Federal Cartel Office, Andreas Mundt.

Inexpensive petrol stations remained relatively cheap, expensive ones remained expensive.

Cheap refueling options were easy to find using appropriate mobile phone apps.

The Cartel Office has evaluated the price development of around 14,800 petrol stations.

According to observations by the Cartel Office, the ups and downs in fuel prices have accelerated. While there were mostly five daily price peaks until recently, several big brands made a sixth price increase in the afternoons in March and April. As a result, the price increases and decreases occurred more quickly on top of each other. The price differences between town and country are on average rather small. This also applies to a comparison of the individual regions in Germany.

When it comes to premium gasoline, drivers continue to use the E5 variety, although it is now around 6 cents per liter more expensive than E10. The increased price gap between E5 and E10 "seems to have increased the willingness to buy E10 at best," says the report. The designations E5 and E10 indicate the maximum proportion of ethanol in the fuel. With E5 it is five percent, with E10 it is twice as high.

While the E5 and E10 would have cost almost the same at the beginning of 2020, the price gap increased gradually to around 5 cents over the course of the year.

According to the ADAC, the E10 is currently 6 cents cheaper than the E5.

The Cartel Office suspects that the oil companies want to create stronger incentives to buy E10 in order to meet the requirements for reducing greenhouse gases.

However, the share of E10 in total petrol sales rose only slightly - from a good 12 percent in January to 16 percent in December 2020.
