Schwerin (dpa) - Right before the start of the conference of environment ministers, grazing animal owners from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania demonstrated against a further increase in the number of wolves. The practical guide for the shooting of problem wolves, about which the environment ministers want to advise in their two-day online consultations on Thursday and Friday, should not become a prevention guide, demanded the vice-president of the state farmers' association, Manfred Leberecht, at the demo in Schwerin. This is to be feared. Grazing animal husbandry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is at risk if the wolf population has not stopped growing by 30 percent annually.

The practical guide is intended to regulate the implementation of the Federal Nature Conservation Act nationwide, which has recently been amended to allow wolves to be hunted if they are suspected of killing sheep or other livestock.

He should bring legal security for the decision-makers in the administrations, said the chairman of the conference of environment ministers, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's head of department Till Backhaus (SPD) to the demonstrators.

At the moment, every case of wolf shooting ends up in court or the public prosecutor is investigating.

Backhaus appealed to his counterparts, namely those from the Greens, to support the practical guide.

Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Olaf Lies (SPD) was connected to the demonstration live.

Last year, according to Backhaus, 2891 farm animals were torn from wolves nationwide - in addition to sheep, cattle, horses and wild animals.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there were 441 animals.
