Every two months, the “Hamburg Center for Health Economics” (HCHE) at the University of Hamburg and partners in Portugal, Italy and the Netherlands survey more than 7,000 residents of seven European countries about their attitudes towards combating the coronavirus pandemic - and for a long time During this time, the measures introduced by the governments were supported. According to the latest evaluation of the figures, classified as representative, which were collected in the first two weeks of April, the Hamburg study directors speak of a "trend reversal", however, and almost every second person does not agree with the measures and their implementation. In particular, the distribution of inoculants is now also rejected. 57 percent of respondents in Germany are in favor ofto drop the current vaccination prioritization, i.e. the order of age and occupation groups.

Overall, people in Germany are increasingly critical of the current corona management: 59 percent find the measures ineffective and 49 percent disagree with the corona management this year. This puts Germany on a par with France in last place among the seven European countries surveyed. The governments of Great Britain, Denmark and Portugal get good values for their corona management from their people.

When asked about current vaccination management, 58 percent of people in Germany do not agree with it and almost one or two people think the decision to order the vaccine centrally from the EU is incorrect. In other countries, however, approval of the EU procedure is higher. But there is also a common trend: in almost all European countries examined, the willingness to vaccinate has increased since January. Germany still ranks second to last, ahead of France, but willingness to vaccinate rose from 62 to 67 percent. "In Germany we see a growing willingness to vaccinate, especially among 25 to 34-year-olds, those for whom the incidence has been particularly high in the past few weeks," says Prof. Jonas Schreyögg, Scientific Director of the HCHE, commenting on the results. In this age group, the willingness to vaccinate has grown from 46 to 60 percent since January. However, one in three respondents in this age group also stated that they had no confidence in the safety of the vaccines.

When looking for reasons for the still noticeable vaccine skepticism in some age groups, the study also focuses on the assessment of information policy. The people in Germany have therefore become more skeptical about the information from their government on the whole. Confidence in information policy has fallen by eight percentage points since January 2021. "Those who do not trust the information are also more likely to refuse a vaccination," says Schreyögg. The same applies to people who do not inform themselves about the pandemic. Their willingness for a vaccination is only 38 percent compared to the well-informed with 79 percent. In the group of the little informed, almost one or two people expressed concerns about the safety of the vaccines. But here too, according to Schreyögg, there could be a solution, because general practitioners still enjoy a high reputation among the population (86 percent). "In particular, the high level of trust in family doctors could increase willingness to vaccinate in Germany in the further course," said the study director.

When vaccination is then carried out, there is now a hit list of the coveted vaccines - somewhat different from the survey in January, when almost half of the population still had no preference for a vaccine.

Now this value is only 26 percent.

50 percent of people want a vaccination with Biontech / Pfizer, in second place with only seven percent is the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, all others come afterwards.

29 percent explicitly reject vaccination with AstraZeneca.

In any case, according to the current status, the behavior in the fight against the pandemic should also have an influence on the outcome of the federal election in September, because more than 40 percent of the respondents in Germany stated that the corona management will influence their voting decision.

CDU is now calling for consequences

Meanwhile, the Hamburg CDU is calling for the vaccine prioritization for the AstraZeneca vaccine to be lifted in Hamburg as well. "Vaccination is the key to returning to normal and anything that accelerates vaccination should also be done," said the chairman of the citizenship group, Dennis Thering, on Thursday. "After the first federal states decided yesterday to give up age and vaccination prioritization for Astrazeneca, Hamburg should also take this step immediately."

After Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Bavaria also decided on Wednesday to completely lift the prioritization for the vaccine. For people under 60 years of age, however, detailed advice from the vaccinator is necessary before the injection, as the health ministries announced. The Hamburg health authority, on the other hand, sees no reason to cancel the prioritization that defines the sequence of vaccinations according to the need for protection. The availability of the vaccine is still too low for this. "It is still not the case that the amount is sufficient to meet the demand," said spokesman Martin Helfrich. "That's why we're sticking to the prioritization."
