Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The stricter protective requirements in view of the increasing number of new corona infections are hitting the theater festivals in North Rhine-Westphalia hard.

The first part of the renowned Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen will only run digitally until May 21, as State Secretary for Culture Klaus Kaiser announced on Thursday in the state parliament's culture committee.

After that, the organizers hoped to be able to show similar performances on site again.

The festival will therefore be stretched in time.

All hopes of the cultural industry for gradual openings are "completely outdated" for the time being, said Kaiser.

On Thursday, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier signed the Infection Protection Act with the federal emergency brake, which had previously been approved by the Bundestag and Bundesrat.

If the weekly incidence of corona (infections within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants) exceeds the threshold of 100 on three consecutive days, stricter measures apply from the day after next, such as night exit restrictions and stricter contact restrictions.

The “Theater der Welt” festival planned in Düsseldorf from mid-June should take place outdoors, Kaiser said.

The organizers planned a stage in front of the theater.

The Mülheim Theater Days with the awarding of the Dramatic Prize in May would be organized digitally.

The open-air theaters also suffer from the Corona requirements.

According to a report by the state government, unlike professional ensembles, amateur theaters are not even allowed to rehearse.

The funding for open-air theaters for the year 2021 has been increased by 75,000 euros to 175,000.

The cultural strengthening fund also offers the open-air theaters the opportunity to make up for deficits that threaten their existence.
