Hanover (dpa / lni) - Lower Saxony's Minister of Science Björn Thümler (CDU) sees the billion-dollar project for a new building for the Hanover Medical School (MHH) on schedule, even if there is no date for the groundbreaking ceremony.

Modern clinic buildings are to be built on a 16-hectare construction site near the previous campus by 2030.

"At the moment there are no signs of delays," said the CDU politician on Thursday.

From the special assets of the state totaling 2.1 billion euros for the university hospitals in Hanover and Göttingen, 15 million euros have already been approved for the establishment of the construction company.

In addition, 2.6 million euros will be made available so that the construction site in Hanover will be secured, leveled and cleared this summer.

The MHH and the Göttingen University Medical Center each have EUR 1.05 billion available.

The new MHH building is necessary because the ward block, which was put into operation in 1971, is ailing.

It cannot be renovated because the building no longer meets the requirements of modern medicine.

Minister Thümler thanked the MHH staff for their work "under very difficult conditions" and named the building structure and the stresses caused by the pandemic.

In a first step, the children's clinic with a parent-child center and a heart-lung center are expected to be built at the new location.

The project represents an enormous opportunity for the city and the Hanover region, also with the possibility of economic settlements, emphasized MHH President Michael Manns.

Better connections to public transport than before are important.

The MHH and its partners belong to the top group in infection research and beyond.
