Gengenbach (dpa / lsw) - A suspected art thief has to answer before the district court in Gengenbach (Ortenaukreis) from Friday.

Between April 2016 and May 2018, the 49-year-old man is said to have stolen art objects with a total value of around 200,000 euros from churches and museums in Baden-Württemberg in seven cases.

Due to the current situation in the corona pandemic, the district court is negotiating in room 2 of the Offenburg regional and district court.

The man who is accused of stealing and violating the Culture Protection Act is said to have stolen, among other things, a baroque statue of St. John from the Schöntal monastery.

"The accused is said to have committed the acts with great skill during the regular opening hours of the facilities," says a statement.

During a search in February 2019, French and German investigators were able to seize valuable art objects in the defendant's apartment in France.

In the preliminary investigation, he had shown himself to be fully confessed.
