Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Thousands of drivers drove too fast on the streets of Brandenburg on Wednesday.

The police registered 5844 speed violations during the 24-hour “Speed Marathon” traffic action day, as the authorities announced on Thursday.

On average every 15 seconds someone exceeded the speed limit somewhere in Brandenburg, summarized a police spokesman.

That is "already neat".

The Europe-wide action on Wednesday was intended to draw attention to the dangers and consequences of driving too fast.

According to the information, 393 emergency services checked at 215 locations in Brandenburg whether maximum speeds were exceeded.

The tests were carried out inside and outside of localities, in places requiring special protection such as schools, daycare centers and retirement homes, on district, state and federal highways and on motorways.

The police gave individual examples of particularly conspicuous violations.

A driver in Fredersdorf (Märkisch-Oderland district) drove at 70 kilometers per hour on a road on which a maximum of 30 were allowed.

In front of a daycare center in Potsdam, emergency services recorded a car driver with a handheld laser measuring device who was said to have been traveling 24 kilometers per hour too fast.

During the controls, however, the emergency services also noticed numerous other traffic violations.

In Lübbenau (Oberspreewald-Lausitz district), according to the police, a 40-year-old drove his car without a license, but with 1.63 per mille of alcohol in his blood.

Other drivers telephoned behind the wheel, overtook in the no-overtaking state, ignored traffic lights or drove without seat belts.

Excessive speed is one of the most common causes of accidents on Brandenburg's roads.

According to the police, 64 road users died in an accident due to excessive speed last year.

The European traffic police network “ROADPOL” coordinates the “Speed Marathon”.

29 states took part, according to the network.

In Germany, according to the organizers, all federal states took part, but only in about ten it was a so-called special mission, in which tests were carried out beyond the normal range.
