Paris (dpa) - Airbus wants to reposition itself in aircraft production in Germany and France.

To this end, new companies that belong entirely to Airbus are to be created in each of the two countries, as the group announced on Wednesday.

The aim is to optimize the production process and create a new industrial structure.

Discussions were ongoing for the future installation in Spain, said Airbus.

Currently, production is partially fragmented across the company, subsidiaries and suppliers.

The assembly of the aircraft structure must be viewed as a core activity, and central interfaces are required for this.

The implementation of the plans is now planned for January 1, 2022, the concepts were first presented to the social partners.

Specifically, a company based in Germany is to be created that will combine the activities of Stade and structural assembly in Hamburg with those of the Group subsidiary Premium Aerotec in Nordenham, Bremen and partly in Augsburg.

A company is planned in France that will bring together the activities currently carried out at Airbus in Saint-Nazaire and Nantes with those of Stella Aerospace worldwide.

The two companies should no longer be suppliers, but instead should be integrated into the group. “Their independent status will enable them to concentrate on their area and at the same time to become leaner and more flexible,” says Airbus. Airbus is also planning to set up a new unit based in Germany that will concentrate on the production of individual parts and small components. This should emerge from today's Premium Aerotec.

IG Metall sharply criticized the plans.

"The announcement is an attack on the Airbus and Premium Aerotec locations in Germany," said the IG Metall coast district manager, Daniel Friedrich.

The plans put thousands of jobs at risk.

"We will not accept a break-up of the Premium Aerotec company and a spin-off of individual Airbus locations."

Group boss Guillaume Faury had just emphasized that he saw potential for optimizing and simplifying industrial construction in Europe.

This is currently quite complex and fragmented, he said at the general meeting last week.
