Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - The Central Saxony transport association is pushing ahead with the planning for the new railway line from Chemnitz to Limbach-Oberfrohna and has presented two main variants for the first section.

It is about a 2.5 kilometer long route in the center of Chemnitz.

This is now to be discussed with the citizens and a preferred variant worked out, according to a digital press conference on Wednesday.

The section is expected to cost around 40 million euros.

It has not yet been possible to say when the construction work will begin.

But there will be no major construction site in the city center for the 2025 Capital of Culture year, assured Infrastructure Manager Mathias Korda.

The 17-kilometer route to Limbach-Oberfrohna in the Zwickau district is the most extensive project under the Chemnitz model, which aims to connect Chemnitz more closely with the surrounding area by rail.

12 kilometers of this are planned as a new building.

In Limbach-Oberfrohna itself, the route of a disused railway line is to be used.

The rest of the route to Bornaer Strasse in the north of Chemnitz has not yet been determined;

from there the route then leads to the city center.

According to earlier information, the total costs will amount to around 120 million euros.

The transport association has set the goal of completion in the early 2030s.
