On March 24, 2016, two employees at SLU received an email.

The sender was a manager at a company that supplies equipment to SLU.

The university became aware of the matter and initiated an internal investigation.

The incident was also reported to the police.

Two of those involved in the company - and the two employees at SLU - lost their jobs.

Everyone denies the crime

The managers of the company tell the court that they did not have the right to offer customer travel but that they only followed orders.

According to the verdict, it does not matter if they were instructed or not.

The CEO then stepped forward and distanced himself from what had happened.

One of the SLU employees stated that he intended to pay for the trip himself.

The other says that on a later occasion he cycled past the company office and declined the trip.

According to the court, however, they were already guilty of a crime when they accepted the invitation, regardless of what they intended or if they changed their minds later.

Eliminates punishment

Two people are now sentenced for giving a bribe, and the former employees at SLU are sentenced for taking a bribe.

However, the district court considers that it has been so long since the incident that it appears to be clearly unreasonable that they should receive any punishment.

All were previously unpunished.

The company is sentenced to a fine of SEK 30,000 for not having implemented the routines that they themselves have shown to prevent bribery.
