Mannheim (dpa / lsw) - National striker David Wolf is no longer available to the Adler Mannheim in the fight against the surprisingly early end of the season and is also canceled for the ice hockey world championship.

The 2018 Olympic silver medalist injured his arm with a 2: 3 after extra time against outsider Straubing Tigers on Tuesday and was operated on on Wednesday night.

"Losing a player like David in the championship fight due to injury is extremely bitter," said sports manager Jan-Axel Alavaara in a club announcement about the Adler top scorer in the main round.

Without a top performer, Pavel Gross’s Mannheim team will have to win at the Straubing Tigers on Thursday (7.30 p.m.) to avoid losing the quarter-finals.

In the event of a victory, there would be a decisive third game on Saturday (5.30 p.m.) in Mannheim.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this time only two instead of four victories are necessary to advance.

This could be the fate of the favorite.

One month before the start of the ice hockey world championship, the end of the season for Wolf is also the next setback for the national team.

National coach Toni Söderholm has to do without the Berlin striker Leo Pföderl and the Munich attacker Patrick Hager due to injury at the tournament.
