Munich (dpa) - After the decision in favor of Armin Laschet as the Union's candidate for chancellor, CSU boss Markus Söder has again stood behind the CDU chairman.

In a CSU parliamentary group meeting in the state parliament on Wednesday, he again assured Laschet of full support in the federal election campaign, according to participants.

Söder spoke very conciliatory, it was said.

He was very at peace with himself, said the CSU chairman.

After his speech, Söder received exceptionally long applause from the MPs.

Söder said the election result in Bavaria will now look different than if he had become a candidate.

But the CDU result in North Rhine-Westphalia will be better - that will balance out overall.

However, Söder does not want to head the CSU's Bundestag list.

Anyone on the list would also have to go to Berlin, said CSU General Secretary Markus Blume, according to the participants.

The parliamentary group is damn happy that he is staying in Munich.

State parliamentary group leader Thomas Kreuzer emphasized, according to participants, that it was correct that Söder had made an offer.

"Many people in Germany wanted that."

Kreuzer emphasized that the CSU had deliberately refrained from supporting Söder by putting others down.

He does not want to comment on what the CDU has done.

According to participants, Bavaria's Finance Minister Albert Füracker said that many people were of the opinion that one should take the best.

Especially those who still had their political future ahead of them were in favor of Söder.
