Alt Tellin / Stralsund (dpa) - The first results of the investigation into the cause of the fire in the pig breeding facility Alt Tellin (Western Pomerania-Greifswald) will be available in two weeks at the earliest.

A spokesman for the Stralsund public prosecutor said on Wednesday, citing the responsible fire expert.

After the largely completed investigations at the scene of the fire, protocols would now be viewed in which the technical operation of the ventilation and sprinkler systems was recorded.

Sprinkler systems ensure the necessary moisture in the stables during operation.

There is still suspicion of negligent arson, said the spokesman.

A technical defect is also possible.

The large facility, which has been criticized by animal and environmentalists for years, in which, according to the operator, there were 7,000 sows and 50,000 piglets, was largely burned down on March 30th.

More than 55,000 pigs perished in flames and smoke.

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the biogas plant.

So far, the public prosecutor has estimated the damage at around 40 million euros.

The operator doubted this estimate, but did not want to comment on it in more detail.

Clean-up and disposal work continues at the scene of the fire.
