Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In the Corona year 2020, slightly more women sought protection from violence in a women's refuge in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania than in 2019. According to Social Affairs Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD), the nine women's shelters in the state took 291 women last year and 306 children.

In the previous year there were 285 women and 310 children.

Those who were less affected by domestic or sexual violence sought advice.

With protection and advice together, 4369 people were counted after 4531 in the previous year.

Of them, 3792 were women, 393 men and 184 people of various genders or without gender information.

In addition, according to the ministry, there are 356 registered children and adolescents who directly experienced domestic violence (18), sexual violence (333) or human trafficking and forced marriage (5).

This is a slight increase.

"In 2019 there were a total of 342 directly affected minors," it said.

The figures make it clear how important a tight network of support is for victims of violence, emphasized Minister Drese.

There is a high number of unreported cases when it comes to domestic and sexual violence.

A connection between the number of cases in 2020 and the exit and contact restrictions in the wake of the corona pandemic has not yet been clearly established.

"But the police statistics on the number of police operations in cases of domestic violence have shown steadily increasing numbers for several years."
