Emmanuel Macron and Mario Draghi have concluded a “new alliance”, a Paris-Rome axis that has the potential to replace the Berlin-Paris tandem.

The Franco-Italian alliance is reminiscent of attempts to form a “southern alliance” in Europe against the hegemony of Germany.

"Renaissance" was what Macron called his project for the renewal of the EU, with which he reacted to the European immobility of German politics.

This included the revitalization of the Mediterranean Union.
