Haphazard, clumsy and unprofessional - this is how the police act, according to the Hamburg district court, during an arrest in the Lurup district.

A wanted criminal has put a car up for sale on the Internet.

Target investigators from Itzehoe pose as interested parties and arrange a meeting in a fast-food restaurant on February 25, 2020.

But the suspicious criminal behaves differently than expected, the action ends dramatically.

In a head-on collision, an officer from the Hamburg State Criminal Police Office suffers serious injuries from which he dies eight days later in hospital. The regional court sentenced the 30-year-old to six years in prison on Wednesday for bodily harm resulting in death and resistance to law enforcement officers, as well as property damage and driving without a driver's license. The accused German was wanted with three enforcement arrest warrants before his arrest, as the presiding judge Joachim Bülter explained.

The Itzehoe district court sentenced him to nine months in prison for bodily harm.

There are also two fines from the Itzehoe district court for driving without a license.

The 30-year-old has many criminal records: theft, fraud, bodily harm, extortion, road traffic offenses, as judge Bülter explains.

The defendant dropped out of school and did not complete any professional training.

He made up his secondary school leaving certificate in prison.

He looks well-groomed and educated, and he appears in court with a white shirt and dark jacket.

According to the judge, he got to know women through contact portals on whose behalf he trades in high-powered cars. On January 19 last year he wants to drive to a snack bar at night with a woman and an acquaintance. In a curve in Hamburg-Hamm he loses control of the car and hits a tree. The defendant makes off, but the police are now hot on his heels.

When the damaged Mercedes is offered on the Internet, an Itzehoer target investigator reports as a supposed buyer.

"Tommy" makes an appointment with the defendant.

The officer also notifies his Hamburg LKA colleagues.

Shortly before the agreed time in the evening, the wanted person calls and says that he will not come to the parking lot of the restaurant, but only to a nearby bus stop.

Two officials from Itzehoe go there without agreement.

The battery of Tommy's work cell phone has meanwhile run out, the suggestion to abort the action no longer reaches him.

When the wanted man drives up to the stop and opens the passenger door, Tommy and his companion “Norman” introduce themselves.

One of the officers thinks they would get in and drive the offender to the Mercedes that was being offered.

He puts his hand on the colleague's shoulder.

The former paratrooper misunderstood this as a sign of access.

"The two officers did not know from each other what the other wanted," said Bülter.

Norman jumps into the passenger seat and shouts "Police!" The accused understood immediately that he should be arrested, the judge emphasized.

The person you're looking for steps on the gas pedal and makes a 270-degree turn on Luruper Hauptstrasse.

The officer unsuccessfully pulls the gear lever in the wrong direction, grabs the steering wheel and gives the driver punches.

A few moments later, the car collides head-on at around 30 km / h against the civilian BMW of the LKA official.

The 57-year-old had been on observation post at a gas station and drove off after the wanted man arrived.

He is not buckled up and traveling at around 40 kilometers per hour.

In a collision, his head hits the airbag and back.

A cervical vertebra breaks.

The 57-year-old is resuscitated and is in a coma in the hospital.

After eight days, the bereaved decide to end the life support measures.

"You are not the great guy with the fast luxury cars"

"I'm very sorry about what happened, but actually I can't help it" - this is how the judge sums up the defendant's defense strategy and adds: "This is wrong!" The 30-year-old is complicit in his high-risk escape behavior. "You should realize that you are not the great guy with the fast luxury cars," says Bülter to the defendant. Rather, he should understand that he is an egotistical and often convicted person who has to change his behavior fundamentally. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
