Neubrandenburg / Potsdam (dpa) - At the district court of Neubrandenburg, a civil process began on Wednesday for monetary claims against the last GDR interior minister and lawyer Peter-Michael Diestel.

After around an hour of negotiation, judge Christian Weidlich proposed a settlement that both sides assessed as "acceptable", but asked for a further review period.

Diestel himself had not come for health reasons and was represented by a lawyer.

In the proceedings, Mario Genth, as Diestel's former law firm partner, is demanding 280,000 euros from their time together in Potsdam.

The verdict is due to be announced on May 12th.

In the opinion of the plaintiff, his claims were not adequately taken into account in 2017 when the joint law firm was dissolved.

According to his own statements, Genth had 37.5 percent of the shares in the joint law firm, which he claims to have taken over from another of Diestel's former lawyers.

Diestel denies that, as his lawyer explained.

The current proposal for the settlement provides that Diestel pays the plaintiff 50,000 euros and ensures that Genth no longer has to pay for the shares.

There are currently 128,000 euros outstanding.

The plaintiff stated on Wednesday that he wanted to accept the settlement.

The lawyer wanted to consult with the ex-interior minister.

The 69-year-old Diestel was Interior Minister in the last GDR government from April 1990 until reunification in October.

The center of his office is now in Zislow, which is part of the Neubrandenburg district court.
