Berlin (dpa) - The Bundestag decided on Wednesday to introduce a nationwide emergency brake against the third wave of corona.

With the corresponding change in the Infection Protection Act, exit restrictions from 10 p.m. and further steps to avoid contact are getting closer.

In a roll-call vote, 342 MPs voted for the law.

There were 250 votes against and 64 abstentions.

The parliamentary groups of the Union and the SPD had previously voted in favor of it in the second reading.

AfD, FDP and Left voted against the law.

The Greens abstained.

The emergency brake is intended to establish binding nationwide rules for stricter corona countermeasures.

In districts or cities with high numbers of infections, extensive exit restrictions should apply at night.

A stop in classroom teaching and stricter regulations for businesses are also intended to contain new infections.

The regulations could take effect from Saturday at the earliest.

Before that can happen, they have to pass the Federal Council on Thursday.

In addition, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has yet to sign the law, and it has yet to be promulgated.

The measures are limited to June 30th.

The legislature assumes that by then at the latest the pandemic will be greatly suppressed by the vaccinations.

The decision was preceded by a verbal exchange of blows in the plenum.

More than 8,000 opponents of the Corona measures demonstrated near the Reichstag building.

The police banned the demonstration due to massive violations of the corona rules.

Officials tried to disperse attendees.

Protesters attacked police officers.
