Fürth (dpa / lby) - Bavarian breweries sold less beer last year, but defended their top position in Germany.

Although the sales of the local brewers fell by 100 million liters to 2.28 billion liters of beer, they are still ahead of their colleagues from North Rhine-Westphalia, who sold 2.03 billion liters, such as the State Office for Statistics on the occasion of German Beer Day determined on Friday.

Bavarian breweries have occupied this top position for the seventh time in a row.

The Free State's top position in terms of the number of breweries is even clearer: 41.9 percent of all German breweries are in Bavaria.

However, their number fell by 8 to 640. As usual, the Bavarian breweries sold the most beer in the summer months.

In the course of the year, however, there was a dent, especially in spring: In April and May in particular, less beer was drunk than in previous years.
