The White House offers condolences on the death of Chadian President Idriss Deby
The White House offered its "sincere condolences" to the people of Chad today, Tuesday, on the death of President Idriss Deby.
"We condemn the recent acts of violence and the loss of life in Chad. We support the peaceful transfer of power in accordance with the Chadian constitution," a White House spokesman said in a statement.
The Chadian army announced today, Tuesday, that President Idriss Deby, who ruled the country for more than 30 years, was killed while inspecting the forces on the battlefront with the northern rebels.
Army spokesman Azim Bermindau Aguna said in a televised broadcast that a transitional council that includes a group of senior army officers has chosen General Muhammad Kaka, Deby's son, as the interim president.
