China News Agency, United Nations, April 19th. United Nations Secretary-General Guterres called on the Security Council on the 19th to hope that Asian countries will step up their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Myanmar.

The Security Council held a high-level open debate on "Strengthening Cooperation between the United Nations and Regional and Subregional Organizations" on the same day.

Guterres said that the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) maintain a comprehensive cooperative relationship, and ASEAN plays an important role in diplomacy, conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Guterres said that for the current crisis in Myanmar, the role of ASEAN is more critical than ever.

The international community’s response to the current situation needs to be based on a unified regional effort. Therefore, cooperation between the United Nations and ASEAN is also crucial.

He urged all parties to exert their influence to prevent the situation from further deteriorating and finally find a peaceful solution to the problem.

Guterres said that the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Myanmar, Birgner, has arrived in Southeast Asia and is ready to resume dialogue with all parties, including the Myanmar military.

Regarding the cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations, Guterres said that this issue has always been one of his key priorities after assuming the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

He stated that since its establishment in 1945, cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations has "exponentially increased", covering areas including preventive diplomacy, mediation, counter-terrorism, peacekeeping and the promotion of human rights.

In addition, important cooperation is also being carried out in response to climate change and the new crown pneumonia pandemic.

Guterres stated that the United Nations has cooperated with organizations such as the European Union, the African Union, and the League of Arab States to carry out work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sudan, Mali, Libya and other countries, and has achieved solid results in various fields such as politics, economy, and society.

This shows that by cooperating with regional and subregional organizations, the United Nations can more effectively support member states in dealing with complex political transition issues and find sustainable solutions to political challenges.

He said that he is committed to more closely participating in the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts in order to promote the establishment of trust and dialogue between relevant parties.

Guterres emphasized that strengthening the partnership between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations is an indispensable part of his vision of "networked multilateralism."

Facing the current and future challenges of the world, including those exposed and exacerbated by the new crown pneumonia pandemic, we can only deal with it through "ambitious and coordinated multilateral actions."
